June 8th, the Monday after the kids got out of school, I took the kids to Gridley to visit our cousins who were here from Utah. What a fun day... swimming, playing, visiting, eating, and riding the golf cart. Sounds like fun, huh? Well, it was for a while. The kids were having fun jumping in the pool, playing with the newborn puppies, and taking turns on the golf cart in the orchard. A golf cart mind you.....all was fine, until Zach, Andrew and Jared were together in the orchard. I was on the back porch with my cousin, Shannon, when all of a sudden , we heard blood curtling screams coming our way. My heart sank, something was very wrong. Here comes Zach running toward me, with Jared on his back. The golf cart had tipped and somehow Jared's right foot was severely injured. I immediately took Jared and laid him on the ground and started praying. Shannon grabbed the van, and with some help we got Jared in the van and off to the hospital we went. Poor Jared was hysterical, Zach was scared to death he had ruined his brother's foot. Shannon and I left all the kids there with her in-laws. (Thank you!!) We got to the Gridley ER and Jared was taken right in. His foot didn't really look like a foot, so much blood and dirt mixed in, it was hard to see what we were dealing with. They took good cared of him...started an IV, gave him morphine and began to explore what we had. Jared had five breaks and a partial degloving. He needed surgery, and to see an Orthopedic surgeon. We were put in an ambulance and taken to Chico. Mom and Lonnie saved the day and got the other kids and my van and brought them home. It was a long night in the ER, but Jared was able to go home with lots of meds.
Friday he had his first surgery, and came out with a wound vac in place. We were really hoping they could close the wound at that time, but Dr. Benson said it was too dirty and needed some more time. Life was a little tricky, but we managed well for a few days. Monday came around and the wound vac pump lost all suction. Mom had to be the wound nurse (not recommended for your own child) With tears from us both, yelling and vomiting, we changed the dressing and later that day the wound vac was replaced. Wed he had his second surgery. We are blessed that the wound looked well enough to do the skin graft. Jared now has a 4 inch incision on his thigh that he is planning on telling people he had a hammerhead shark bite. (hmmmm????) Tomorrow morning we will go to the doctor and unveil the dressing to see how the skin graft is doing. We are praying that everything looks well and a repeat is not needed.
Through all this Jared has been such a trooper, we have had to be creative in the entertainment department, but he has done well with the instructions to keep his foot elevated. He has crutches that he is now using well, and a wheelchair for when we go out.
Yes, I have pictures, but am a little hesitant to post them. Not everyone likes the gross things in life.....
Thank you to all our family and friends who have been by to visit, pray and support Jared and us through this trial. We are grateful that things were not worse. He will heal, it's just going to be a long boring summer for an active 10 year old who is dying to swim. Bless his heart!
